Two different things you might be filing.
A first ascent goes to the Auto Road, who run the event and decide who is invited. A correction to the register comes here. This page covers both, because people keep confusing them.
Filing a first ascent
Alton Weagle Day is free with an RSVP. You email the Auto Road an idea, and if it fits the spirit of the day you may be invited. There is no form and no deadline published.
What actually gets picked
Read the register and a pattern falls out. The successful ones are not the hardest, they are the ones with a clean sentence. “First pizza delivered on stilts.” “First van reversed to the summit.” “First forward pass thrown on Mount Washington.” If you cannot say your first in one line without a subordinate clause, it is probably two ideas.
It also helps that the claim is checkable. “First person to walk it backward while juggling” is a fact somebody can confirm from a photograph. “First person to feel truly present on the road” is not.
And it is a mountain. Weather turns fast, the drop is real, and several past participants brought a support person specifically to keep them away from the edge. A plan that survives fog is worth more than a plan that is funnier.
Before you send
- State the first in one sentence.
- Search the register so you are not reinventing 2016.
- Say what gear or vehicle is involved and whether it is road-legal.
- Say how many people, including any support crew.
- Say what you do if the summit is closed.
- Say how it gets photographed, because that is how it enters the record.

Filing a correction
The register is reconstructed from newspaper coverage, which means it is missing most of the people who were actually there. If you were one of them, you are a primary source.
Useful things to send
Anything that moves an entry up a grade:
- A dated photograph, with who took it
- A newspaper clipping, with the paper and date
- Your own name against a year the press did not cover
- The year the camels went up
- Anything at all about why 2025 was skipped
What will not be published
Family photographs without written permission from whoever holds them, and any claim that cannot be graded. “I heard he once…” is welcome as a lead and will not go on the page as a fact.
How a grade moves
claimed becomes attested with a second independent source, and documented when somebody links the primary. Grades go down as well as up.
